Sing It, Play It, Slay It: The Ultimate Musical Combo

Updated: May 1

From AR Rahman to famous pop artists like Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga, to Norah Jones for jazz, and Julie Andrews from The Sound of Music, they all have two things in common. They are singers who play instruments.

And often, those instruments are either the piano or the guitar. These two aren’t just popular—they’re powerful. The piano lays out music in a visual, harmonic landscape that helps singers understand structure, pitch, and emotion on a deeper level. On the other hand, the guitar brings rhythm and portability, making it a go-to for songwriting, jamming, and performing on the fly.

The piano is one of the best tools to see music. Its easy to visualize scales, chords, and progressions. For singers, this means more than just hitting the right notes—it’s about understanding how those notes fit into the larger musical story. It’s perfect for vocal warm-ups, exploring harmony, and even arranging music. Plus, the ability to accompany yourself while practicing is a total game-changer.

How to use the piano to your advantage?

Use it for vocal warmups Play gentle scales or chord progressions while warming up your voice. It helps keep you in tune, focused, and connected to your breath and pitch.

Perfect your scales and pitch Practicing vocal exercises alongside the piano sharpens your ear and strengthens your control. You’re not just matching notes—you’re understanding them.

Learn basic chords and melodies Start by playing simple chord patterns or melodic lines. This builds your ability to accompany yourself, making practice more independent and creative.

Understand how the music works Seeing how harmony supports melody and how different chords create different moods deepens your musical intuition.

How Learning the Guitar Can Enhance Your Singing:

Use it for vocal warmups Play simple chord progressions or finger exercises while warming up your voice. The guitar helps you stay in tune and builds rhythmic consistency.

Perfect your scales and pitch Playing scales on the guitar while practicing your vocal pitch allows you to hear both the harmony and melody, strengthening your ear and vocal control.

Learn basic chords and melodies Familiarizing yourself with chords and melodies on the guitar provides a deeper connection to the music and allows you to accompany yourself easily.

Understand rhythm and timing The guitar is a great tool for learning rhythm. It teaches you how to match your vocal phrasing with the timing of the music.

Express yourself through both voice and instrument Playing the guitar while singing gives you a greater sense of freedom, allowing you to experiment with your own arrangements and fully express your musical ideas.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that picking up an instrument—especially the piano or guitar—can completely change how you experience music as a singer. It’s not just about playing the right chords or hitting the right notes. It’s about connecting more deeply with the music you love, and understanding it from the inside out.

It helped me listen better, practice smarter, and express myself more honestly. Even the smallest things—like playing my own warmups or figuring out a simple chord progression—made me feel more grounded and in control of my voice.

So if you’re a singer and you’ve been thinking about learning an instrument, this is your gentle nudge: go for it. Start slow. Be curious. And enjoy the process of watching your voice and your instrument grow together.

Because music isn’t just something we perform—it’s something we live. And playing an instrument makes that experience even more alive.
